A critical examination of the most important monographs, edited books and exhibition catalogues which were published on the occasion of the bimillennium of the Roman defeat in the year 9 A.D. brings forth some foggy results. The interest in the battle as it′s expressed through many manifestations of recent public history comes from different sources, including the sensational findings at Kalkriese. These findings, however, have increased the number of methodological problems which impede all efforts toward an appropriate reconstruction, interpretation and putting into context of the battle-event, since the sheer mass of relevant data can no longer be surveyed and synthesized without exceeding the competence of a single scholar. When considering the tremendous work on the archeological findings one has nevertheless to stress that without literary tradition the unearthed remains of the battle-field would be silent and disjointed. In addition, they would never have stirred up so much public interest. The question where the battle took place must be left open. Even if the findings in Kalkriese were to be connected with the events of the year 9 A.D., the precise course of the destruction of the legions is not exactly to be determined. Eventually, the historical context is lighted up, especially the purposes, means and results of Roman policy in Germania as well as the possible reasons for the uprising and its importance to the historical process in all. Alltogether the judgement of Tiberius turned out to be sound: big wars and uprisings didn′t take place in following decades, so the Roman emperors could decide to keep things on a long lead either or to search military fame in Germania. The fact that Germania did not become romanized is not synonymous with a failure of the Roman policy.

Following Henri Pirenne, the emergence of the European town is traced to merchants operating over far distances in the time of change in the late 11th century. This essay looks at the merchant settlements that were formed during that time as a unique form of settlement and an early precursor of the European town and sets them into context with the canonisation of Saint Nicholas as the patron saint of merchants in 1087. In effect, a correlation between the Nicholas cult and the rise in prosperity in Western Europe can be found. Thus, the founding of churches dedicated to St. Nicholas serves as a source for tracing the development of towns both geographically and topographically. For this, the works of Paul Johansen (1091–1965) are drawn on. This essay repeats the findings that were detailed in my essay published in 1967, but addresses some of the criticism that followed the first publication. 15 examples of merchant settlements throughout Europe are given, taking the research on settlement history of the Leipzig school around Rudolf Kötzschke and the flourishing of the monetary economy during that time into consideration. When the merchant settlements developed into towns, the Nicholas cult lost its significance but is still traceable by the thousands of churches dedicated to St. Nicholas that exist to the present day.

The article offers the first coherent outline of the East German Protestant theology′s attitude towards politics. The authors raise the question, in which ways Protestant theology responded to the new socialist state. Is it possible to regard the history of religious thought in the GDR as a product of the existence of the socialist state? To address these questions the essay turns to the approach of intellectual history, famously known as the Cambridge School, which situates ideas within their contexts. The authors disagree with the well-known perception that Protestants after the Second World War once more readjusted their theology to the new situation. Rather, it is argued here that after 1945, there was an apparent break. Theologians criticized the atheistic government, and argued about an adequate understanding of authority. In fact, only external events made the churches give up their oppositional theology step by step. These events were for example the end of hopes that the unification of Germany might occur in the near future, a realization which weakened the backing of East German churches in the all-German EKD, or the overwhelming power of the East German authority, that extradited the churches to the totalitarian state. Next to such structural reasons the authors name cultural motives for the theological adjustment. These include for example criticism of the institution EKD, that was uttered by younger theologians in order to dissociate themselves from the older generation. The international ecumenical discourses were also very influential: since the seventies these ecumenical ideas displayed increasing scepticism towards capitalism and openness towards socialism. Altogether the protestant theology was more and more used as an instrument for justifying the way of adaption to the socialist regime. In conclusion, it was not theology that defined the political position of Protestantism, but rather – as this article tries to show – external parameters that shaped Protestant theology.
